Steatorrhoea refers to the passing of excessive amounts of fat in the faeces.

Causes

Lipase deficiency

  • Impaired secretion – chronic pancreatitis

  • Inactivation – excess gastric acid

Bile deficiency

  • Underproduction – liver disease

  • Obstruction – obstructive jaundice

Mucosal disease

  • Coeliac disease

  • Ileal resection

  • Crohn’s disease
