Metabolic alkalosis is caused by an increase in HCO 3 or decrease in H + (↑ pH,↑HCO 3 ). Compensatory mechanisms are:

  • ↑ pCO 2 by hypoventilation (limited by hypoxia)

  • ↓ HCO 3 by kidneys.
