Hydroquinone has been used in skin bleaching formulations for the treatment of hyperpigmentation and can cause short- and mid-term reactions like exogenous ochronosis and leukoderma en confetti, irritant reactions, and allergic reactions [ ]. Long-term adverse reactions such as nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity have only been demonstrated in animals.
