Ecabet is an anti-ulcer agent that works by irreversibly inhibiting urease and ATPase in Helicobacter pylori under acidic conditions [ , ]. It may also impair bacterial adhesion to gastric epithelia [ ]. It has bactericidal activity against clarithromycin- and metronidazole-resistant strains of clinical isolates of Helicobacter pylori [ ]. It has been used in combination with other drugs to eradicate Helicobacter pylori , for example after recurrence following initial eradication [ , ]. Ecabet enemas have also been investigated in patients with mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis [ , ].
