Neck pain is a common presenting complaint. The majority of cases are due to poor posture or cervical spondylosis. If there has been a history of trauma, extreme care must be taken in examination of the neck and any X-rays must be strictly supervised.

  • Torticollis

  • Klippel–Feil syndrome

Acquired

Traumatic

  • Fractures

  • Dislocations

  • Whiplash injury

Inflammatory

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Infective

  • Herpes zoster

  • TB • (common where TB is endemic)

Degenerative

  • Cervical spondylosis

  • Cervical radiculopathy

  • Degenerative cervical myelopathy

Neoplastic

  • Secondary deposits

Other

  • Postural

  • Exposure to cold

  • Meningitis

  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage

  • Osteomyelitis
