General information

In a short-term multicenter study of flurbiprofen only 6% of patients were withdrawn because of adverse reactions [ ]. However, in a prolonged open study in 1200 patients, more than 50% reported adverse reactions and therapy had to be withdrawn in l9% [ ].

Organs and systems

Nervous system

Nervous system reactions to flurbiprofen are less common than with indometacin [ ]. Flurbiprofen precipitates extrapyramidal reactions, albeit rarely [ ], and a parkinsonian syndrome has been reported in a predisposed patient [ ].

Gastrointestinal

Flurbiprofen causes more gastrointestinal adverse reactions than naproxen or ibuprofen. In a series of controlled double-blind studies, adverse reactions occurred in 27–42% of patients and were most commonly gastrointestinal in origin (18–28%) [ , ].

Local tolerance of flurbiprofen suppositories is often satisfactory, but discomfort, irritation, tenesmus, and diarrhea have been observed [ ].

Urinary tract

Interstitial nephritis with the nephrotic syndrome and one case of renal papillary necrosis have been recorded [ , ]. Flurbiprofen can cause a membranous nephropathy [ ].
