Fenproporex is structurally related to amfetamine, to which it is rapidly metabolized after oral ingestion. Stimulatory effects, somnolence, and electroencephalographic abnormalities are reported to be the major undesired reactions [ ]. Dependence has also been reported [ ].
Adverse reactions to fenproporex have been reported in individuals who took illegally imported diet pills [ ].
A 26-year-old US woman took imported diet pills for 2 years and had intermittent chest pains, palpitation, headaches, and insomnia. There were amphetamines and benzodiazepines in the urine and fenproporex and chlordiazepoxide in the diet pills. Her symptoms resolved when she stopped taking them.
A 38-year-old US man used imported diet pills, and amfetamine was found in his urine during a routine occupational check. There were fenproporex and fluoxetine in the pills.
