Genera in the family of Amaryllidaceae ( Table 1 ) include the lily genus ( Allium ). This family includes genera that previously belonged to the family of Alliaceae.

Immunologic

Allergy to spices accounts for 2% of all cases of food allergies but 6.4% of cases in adults. Prick tests to native spices in 589 patients with food allergies showed frequent sensitization to the Apiaceae coriander, caraway, fennel, and celery (32% of prick tests in children, 23% of prick tests in adults) and to garlic, onion, and chive (4.6% of prick tests in children, 7.7% of prick tests in adults) [ ]. There were 10 cases of allergy related to the mugwort-celery-spices syndrome: coriander (n = 1), caraway (n = 2), fennel (n = 3), garlic (n = 3), and onion (n = 1). See also the monograph on Latex.

Allium sativum

Allium sativum (garlic, camphor of the poor, da suan, poor man’s treacle, rustic treacle, stinking rose) contains a variety of amino acids and steroids, including ajoene, alliin, allicin, glutamyl- S -allylcysteine, and glutamyl- S -(2-carboxy-1-propyl)-cysteinglycine. Traditionally it has been used as an antiseptic, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, and stimulant and in the treatment of asthma, hoarseness, cough, difficulty in breathing, chronic bronchitis, leprosy, tubercular consumption, whooping-cough, worms, epilepsy, rheumatism, dropsy, and hysteria. In modern times it has been used as a hypolipidemic [ ], although its effect is small [ ].
