Paratesticular idiopathic smooth muscle hyperplasia


Definition

  • Haphazard nonneoplastic overgrowth of the native smooth muscle between or around the vessels or efferent ducts in the paratesticular region or the spermatic cord

Clinical features

Epidemiology

  • Mean age, 63 years (range, 46–81 years)

  • Etiology not clear; may represent hamartomatous proliferation

  • Epididymal or vas deferens ductal ectasia in some cases suggestive of an obstruction as a cause
