Malignant mesothelioma, paratesticular


Definition

  • Highly aggressive tumor arising from the mesothelial lining of the tunica vaginalis, and less commonly from the spermatic cord or epididymis

Clinical features

Epidemiology

  • Rare, accounts for less than 1% of all malignant mesotheliomas

  • Usually affecting older patients (mean age, 65 years); some pediatric cases reported

  • Association with asbestos exposure is weaker than with pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas (30%–40% of cases for the former)
