Commonly Utilized Equations in Echocardiography

General Body Measures

Body Mass Index

B M I = Weight H e i g h t 2
  • W weight (kg)

  • H height (cm)

Body Surface Area (Mosteller Formula)

B S A = W × H 60
  • W weight (kg)

  • H height (cm)

Echocardiography

Left and Right Ventricle

Left Ventricular Volume (Teicholz Formula)

L V E D V = [ 7 / ( 2.4 + L V E D D ) ] L V E D D 3
  • LVEDV = LV end-diastolic volume (mL)

  • LVEDD = LV end-diastolic diameter (mm)

  • LVESD = LV end-systolic diameter (mm)

The same formula is used to calculate the left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV), substituting LVESD for LVEDD, and the percent difference is used to calculate the LVEF.

(See Fig. 14.4 , in which LVIDd = LVEDD and LVIDs = LVESD)

Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (Simplified Quinones Equation)

L V E F = L V E D D 2 L V E S D 2 L V E D D 2 × 100 % + K
  • LVEDD = LV end-diastolic diameter (mm)

  • LVESD = LV end-systolic diameter (mm)

  • K = correction for apical contraction

    • +10% if normal

    • +5% if hypokinetic

    • +0% if akinetic

    • −5% if dyskinetic

    • −10% if aneurysmal

Left Ventricular Fractional Shortening

F S = L V E D D L V E S D L V E D D × 100 %
  • LVEDD = LV end-diastolic diameter (mm)

  • LVESD = LV end-systolic diameter (mm)

Left Ventricular Mass (Linear Method, Cube Formula)

L V M a s s = 0.8 ( 1.04 ( L V E D D + I V S d + P W d ) 3 L V E D D 3 ) + 0.6 g
  • LVEDD = LV end-diastolic diameter (mm)

  • LVESD = LV end-systolic diameter (mm)

  • IVSd = Interventricular septal thickness at end-diastole (mm)

  • PWd = Posterior wall thickness at end-diastole (mm)

Relative Wall Thickness

R W T = I V S d + P W d L V E D D
  • IVSd = Interventricular septal thickness at end-diastole (mm)

  • PWd = Posterior wall thickness at end-diastole (mm)

  • LVEDD = LV end-diastolic diameter (mm)
