Europe covers a land area of 10 million km 2 and has a population of 750 million people in 45 independent countries with a significant variability in the standard of living, culture, religion, ethnics, and politics. The European Union (EU) has 27 member countries after Brexit in 2020 and has, during its existence, functioned as a significant organ for peace, increased equality, and improved standardization in many areas of society, including health care and education. The Nordic countries form a relatively uniform area concerning politics and public health-care funding. They have small populations in a geographically large area (except for Denmark), standardized education systems, and good availability of modern technologies.
