Verumontanum mucosal gland hyperplasia


Definition

  • Benign, small acinar proliferation of the prostatic glands that occurs exclusively in the verumontanum and adjacent prostatic urethra. A potential mimic of prostate adenocarcinoma.

Clinical features

Epidemiology

  • Older patients (age 47–87)

  • Incidental finding in 14% of radical prostatectomy specimens in men 47–87 years of age

  • Rarely encountered in needle biopsy specimens

  • Unlikely to be present in TUR prostate specimens as the verumontanum is avoided during this procedure
